The implementation of standards will not only ensure the quality of products and services in the market and enhance our competitiveness, it can also deter the entry of substandard products into the market. It will also help ensure that quality products comply with safety and environmental regulations. Additionally, it will increase access to international markets and establish a framework to enforce compliance and consumer protection.

The implementation of standards in Malaysia could be carried out by way of:

• The Adoption of International Standards. Market access can be enhanced through the identification of key market segments that require the adoption of standards
• The Internationalisation of Malaysian Standards. Existing Malaysian standards can be further developed to meet global demands and leveraged towards international recognition
• The establishment of an Effective Government Structure. Establishing a governance mechanism which includes specific regulations and an enforcement body is vital to the implementation of standards

The lab focused on a few sectors based on the high potential growth and industry demand. A generic tool-kit was also developed that can be replicated for other sectors.
