Making an Impression in Melaka

KUALA LUMPUR, 3 SEPTEMBER 2013 - Ministry of Tourism & Culture has endorsed "Impression Melaka" as the latest Entry Point Project within the Tourism National Key Economic Area (NKEA). This unique tourism product will feature a mega outdoor performance directed by Zhang Yimou, Wang Chaoge & Fanyue - directors of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Opening & Closing Ceremony.

"Impression Melaka" will showcase a perfect combination of natural environment as the background, whilst utilizing the latest light & sound technologies, modern art concepts and a huge number of cultural performers.

This is the first and only Mega Outdoor Impression Series outside China, and exclusive to the Southeast Asia region.

This project will add a key highlight to Malaysia, and contribute to making Malaysia a preferred destination. "Impressions Melaka" targets to host two or three shows every night, each approximately 70-90 minutes in duration. It boasts of a rotating audience seating that can accommodate up to 2,000 visitors per performance.

In line with the Tourism National Key Economic Area (NKEA) this RM213.2 million project is estimated to attract approximately 1.2 million tourists per annum, generating RM179 million GNI into the economy.

It will also create approximately 500 direct employment and thousands of indirect job opportunities to the locals. Besides that, the project targets to attract foreign investments and boost the local livelihood.

Minister of Tourism & Culture, Dato' Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz in his announcement said that new niche products will help to grow the tourism industry.

Efforts by Ministry have been intensified towards developing and recognizing new, creative and innovative tourism products that will attract more tourists to visit Malaysia and make Visit Malaysia Year 2014 a success.

He also added that Malaysia recorded 12.55 million tourist arrivals from January to June 2013, a 7.9% growth compared to the same period in 2012. Correspondingly, tourist receipts rose by 16.3%, contributing RM31.18 billion to the country's revenue against RM26.80 billion from January to June 2012.

To date, the signing ceremony of the agreement with China Impression Wonders Arts was held on 24th Feb 2013 in Melaka and an International Press Conference was also held in Beijing on 15th May 2013, witnessed by both Ambassadors of Malaysia and China.

This project is scheduled to be launched in October 2014 and will become one of the iconic events for Visit Malaysia 2014. This is very significant as it coincides with the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Malaysia & China, known as the "Malaysia- China Friendship Year".
