The ongoing debate on food crop use for food production and energy generation has changed the prospect for the use of biofuels and inspired a pursuit of second-generation biofuels, or biofuels that are produced from non-food biomass.
This EPP targets to fast-track the commercialisation of palm biomass-to-liquid technology to generate electricity, fire up boilers and fuel diesel engines.
To demonstrate continuous support of this initiative, an updated edition of the National Biomass Strategy (NBS 2020 v.2.0) was launched in June to reflect all new activities from oil palm biomass to forestry and dedicated crops.
- In 2014, the Lahad Datu biomass joint venture cluster saw the launch of Lahad Datu Biomass JV Cluster Bhd and the addition of more downstream companies to the cluster which includes eight plantation companies, among them Teck Guan Group, Bell Group, Genting Plantations Bhd, Kelas Wira Sdn Bhd and Golden Elate Sdn Bhd.
- Led by the National Innovation Agency, Brook Renewables and its consortium of partners will invest in Sarawak to create Southeast Asia’s first biomass processing hub, a move that could help the state generate RM20 billion in additional revenue and create 10,000 new jobs.
