EPP 5: Developing Biogas Facilities at Palm Oil Mills

As Malaysia grapples with increasing demand for energy and rising fuel costs, the imperative to seek out cleaner energy will loom ever larger.

As such, this EPP encourages palm oil millers to capture methane—a greenhouse gas with huge renewable energy potential—via biogas trapping facilities.

Highlights

  • A pilot biogas plant capable of supplying compressed natural gas to commercial entities will be commissioned in 2015 in Sungai Tengi, Selangor.
  • In 2014, the Government mandated new palm oil mills and mills that are expanding their capacity to install methane avoidance facilities in a bid to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
