EPP 3.0 - Improving Worker Productivity

The palm oil industry has long depended on manual labour, and foreign labour, in particular, to harvest and transport fresh fruit bunch (FFB), leaving it potentially vulnerable to a labour crunch that may hurt productivity.

To this end, this EPP endeavours to introduce new techniques and methods to smallholders and plantation companies that could help boost productivity and reduce dependence on labour.

Highlights

  • MPOB hosted an International Competition on Oil Palm Mechanisation (ICOPM) for nine months from March through November 2014 in a bid to discover and introduce new harvesting techniques that will raise productivity and at the same time, reduce dependence on manual labour. The ICOPM received encouraging participation from local and international research and commercial entities, recording 69 submissions.
