EPP 6.0 - Developing Malaysia as a Shipbuilding and Repair Hub

This EPP focuses on providing competitive pricing, enhanced facilities and increased capabilities for the shipbuilding and maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) market to cater to the growing shipbuilding and repair industry. In 2011, the industry generated a turnover of about RM7.05 billion and about 32,500 jobs and has also attracted RM6 billion worth of investments.

The EPP also aims to develop in-country design capabilities for Offshore Support Vessels (OSV) by training up to 160 engineers and technicians in shipbuilding and ship repair through Boustead Heavy Industries Corporation Bhd (BHIC) and Boustead Naval Shipyard. This measure seeks to develop the first Malaysian-designed OSV.

Highlights

  • The industry created 262 new jobs in 2014, exceeding a target of 240.
  • In 2014, Boustead Heavy Industries Corporation reached the final stages of designing Malaysia's first local Offshore Support Vessel in collaboration with University Technology Malaysia's Marine Technology Centre.
