Konsortium Rangkaian Serantau Sdn Bhd
  • Konsortium Rangkaian Serantau Sdn Bhd (KRS) is a consortium comprising 24 telecommunications companies with the objectives of lowering the wholesale cost of international and domestic bandwidth capacity in order to (a) reduce the price of broadband and (b) improve the service quality of internet access to end customers.

Konsortium Rangkaian Serantau Sdn Bhd (KRS) is a consortium comprising 24 telecommunications companies with the objectives of lowering the wholesale cost of international and domestic bandwidth capacity in order to (a) reduce the price of broadband and (b) improve the service quality of internet access to end customers.
  • Investment
    RM240,000

The consortium is expected to add at least threeTerabytes per second (3 Tbps) of international bandwidth capacity by 2020.

The reduction of IP transit cost is part of the "Extend the Regional Reach" initiative under the Economic Transformation Programme. IP transit cost represents the cost service providers pay to carry Internet traffic around the world but because many sites are hosted in the United States, traffic volumes to the US are high.

Formation of the consortium is a key milestone for the Extending Regional Networks project. A two stage approach is set by the consortium in its move to provide capacity at the lowest cost to members. The first stage is to buy bandwidth capacity from existing bandwidth capacity suppliers in bulk and passing the savings back to the consortium members whilst the next stage is to build submarine cable systems for the members of the consortium.

The consortium company will have an initial paid-up share capital of RM1,200,000 comprising 1,200,000 ordinary shares of RM1 each. All members of the consortium will have equal shares at the start-up of the consortium. In order to be eligible as a member of the consortium, members would have to posses valid Network Facilities Provider (NFP) and Network Service Provider (NSP) licenses issued by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). The consortium is also open to other eligible licensees in the future.
